Amlogic and Skyworth Partner to Create a Netflix Ready RDK Platform Allowing Operators to Efficiently Deploy RDK Set Top Boxes
2021.01.14
Highlights:
● Amlogic and Skyworth partnered to develop Ultra HD set top boxes with Amlogic’s latest S905X2 chipset.
● To simplify the introduction of Netflix into this RDK ecosystem, Netflix has supported the pre-integration of the Netflix App on the set top box. This significantly shortens time to market, minimized integration cost and reduces project risk.
Las Vegas -11 January 2021 - RDK has been a preferred solution for many premium Pay-TV operators over the years. However, the heavy engineering investment on OTT Apps, makes the decision to use RDK complex. To address this issue, Amlogic, a leading fabless semiconductor company, and Skyworth Digital, one of the world’s largest STB manufacturers, decided to develop a Netflix pre-integration set top box with RDK.
Amlogic previously worked closely with Netflix in the Netflix Hailstorm scaling program to pre-integrate the Netflix application into Android TV STB reference platforms. The pre-integration strategy of the Netflix application provides lower cost and faster time-to-market pre-integration STB reference solutions to operators.
RDK is an open-source software platform for connected homes that standardizes core functions used in broadband, video, and IoT connected devices. RDK enables service providers to manage their devices; control their business models; and customize their apps, UIs and data analytics to improve the customer experience and drive business results. For STBs, RDK provides a common method to discover and manage OTT and broadcast video services, conditional access, DRM, configuration, diagnostics and more.
“The demand for RDK-based products is on the rise by pay-TV operators around the globe,” said Charlie Zheng, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, Sales and Marketing, Skyworth Digital. “but the heavy engineering investment on OTT app integration has been a problem for product evolution, and Skyworth is proud to collaborate with Netflix and Amlogic to provide operators a Netflix pre-integration product minimizing the engineering cost significantly.”
“Many service providers are turning to RDK as their software platform of choice for the next generation video and broadband products, and Amlogic will be there for them,” said James Xie, Senior Vice President of Corporate Business Strategy, Amlogic. “We’re delighted to have partnered with Skyworth in the integration of Netflix App on the RDK platform, speeding up time to market, simplifying integration, and delivering an exceptional user experience.”
Skyworth’s RDK box is a UHD IP-set top, running on the Amlogic S905X2 chipset with 2GB DDR4 + 16GB eMMC, dual band 802.11ax Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 6), Bluetooth (BTLE) 5.0. The product with Netflix will be available for pay-tv operators and also technology partners from June 2021.
